Mauritius is situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2,400 kilometres (1,240 miles) off the South East Coast of Africa. The island, which is of volcanic origin, covers an area of 1,865 square kilometres (720 square miles). Coral reefs surround most of the coast except the south. The central plateau is bordered by three mountain ranges giving rise to a landscape of striking beauty. The country includes Rodrigues, an island 560 kilometres to its north-east, and other scattered islands such as Agalega and Cargados Carajos (St. Brandon).Port-Louis, the capital is situated at the north-west coast of the island. |
