Day 4, Annual Africa Leadership Team Meeting in Pretoria, South Africa

Kobus van Niekerk, chairperson for the Africa Leadership Team, referred to the challenging life of a missionary. Some circumstances typical of life in Africa, i.e. corruption, political and bureaucratic hurdles, threat to life, etc., cause real suffering. Heb 6, verses 9 and following clearly state that God is not unjust. He will not forget our work and love. Kobus referred to an airplane’s attitude. Throughout the flight care must be taken to ensure the plane’s nose does not dip below the horizon – or else a crash could be imminent.

To keep our attitude above the horizon, we need hope. Jesus, who learned obedience through suffering, is our hope. As leaders we must be ridiculously optimistic, Kobus said, and look beyond what is commonly perceived as reality. Statistics about Africa may be perceived as overwhelmingly realistic and cause distress. How real are they? How does God see this continent?

Are we influenced by the “God-is-dead”-lie? God can’t break His word, says verse 18.

He has destined us for the throne.
