For more than ten years now, YWAM Dakar has been conducting a medical-dental clinic in one of the poorer districts in Dakar. The goal is to present the gospel as well as providing quality health care for the poor population.
The medical team, with twenty-some Senegalese workers and three YWAM missionaries, treats between 120 and 200 patients daily. Patients, adults and children come for general consultations and can also buy low cost generic medications. Our laboratory provides basic lab tests. Many people also come to receive treatment for wounds, abcesses etc. We put a great deal of emphasis on preventative health care through prenatal visits, vaccinations, regular weighing of our pediatric patients, and daily health teachings. Once a week, malnurished babies and small children are weighed and receive according to their need milk powder and cereal. Their mothers receive teaching about good nutrition. Many of those children improve within just a few weeks.

Two Senegalese nurses, are doing consultations as well as our expatriates, corresponding to one of our goals to place more and more Senegalese Christian workers in positions of responsibility. An american physician assumes the direction of this ministry. Our evangelist is available every morning to talk with and pray for those patients who show an openness to the Gospel. We show the Jesus Film every day in Wolof, the predominant language here in Senegal. As a result, a number of patients have shown an interest in the Christian faith, and some have made a decision to follow Christ.

The dental team treats nearly 45 patients daily. Patients have to wait in line quite early in the morning to be assured of a ticket (first come, first served).
Most Senegalese workers have been trained at the clinic. Many who have in the past worked with us have now gone on the get nursing training.

Historical background
Within just a few decades Dakar has become a bustling city with more than 2 million citizens. Many have left their village hoping to find a better life in the capital. Yet few find a job, whole families are often sharing on small room for a high rent. There is public health care, but of poor quality and most people can't afford prescription medications.
The need for an out patient clinic providing also low cost medication is great. Since the "House of Hope" opened it's doors eleven years ago, people are waiting in line from early in the mornings.
Senegal's population is 92% muslim, yet mostly tolerant to other religions. In the midst of such need, we felt God wanting is to provide not only spiritual, but also physical help.
Please note the dates for upcoming training schools:
- School of praise and worship (in French): September to December 2007
- Discipleship Training School (French and possibly Portuguese) January to June 2008
