IDEAS FOR PROMOTING CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING
- Have one cultural group put on a culture night including food, entertainment, speeches, drama, etc. Debrief afterwards, allowing other cultures to state behaviors or perspectives they observed that were different than their own.
- Have various cultural stations around the room. Each station is noted by poster on the wall with one cultural topic for discussion such as hospitality, appropriate ways to confront an elder, cultural clues that show you are interested in someone, culturally appropriate ways to solve conflicts, behaviors that show respect to elders, etc. Divide the group into groups of 4 which represent at least two cultures. Each group stops at one of the stations and discusses the cultural issue from their personal cultural perspective. At a set time, each group moves on to the next station. Following the discussion time, debrief, asking for the most surprising discovery each person made.
- Designate one afternoon a month to cross-cultural understanding. Select a topic (see above for ideas). Have each cultural group respond to the topic from their cultural perspective in a role play (prepared ahead of time). Do a scriptural exploration of the topic and then ask for input from each cultural group about the implications of the Scripture for their culture (principles already represented within the culture, not represented in the culture, or cultural values opposite to the biblical principle). Discuss ways to integrate positive cultural behaviors within the YWAM culture at your location.
If you have different cultures represented on your base you could have a cultural evening. Persons from each culture could do a drama/cultural dance. You could dress according to your culture & bring some cultural food.
