Morogoro is an agricultural area with rich soil on the edge of high plains 200 km (120 miles) west of Dar-es-Salaam. It is a major junction for roads and railways, connecting northern, central and western Tanzania with Dar-es-Salaam. |

| The cool tropical climate is suited to crops such as maize (corn), rice, matoke (cooking bananas), and citrus fruits. |

| There are about 600,000 people in the district with 95% of the population involved in subsistence farming. Tribes include the Waruguru (60%), the Wakaguru (15%) and the Wagogo (5%). Pastoral tribes such as the Masai (20%) and smaller tribes, such as the Mang'ati and Barbaig, are largely unreached with the Gospel. Swahili is the common language. |

51% of Tanzanians are 'Christian', 35% Muslim and some strictly animistic. Animism (strong tribal traditions and beliefs endowing trees, rocks, etc. with spirits) is strong even within the various religious groups and churches.
